ABOUT US

The World Affairs Book Discussion Group meets monthly to discuss works of fiction and nonfiction related to the affairs of the world.

As you can see on our list of books, we read widely, from novels in translation to travel writing, economics to memoir, history to current events and beyond.

Discussions always are open to new participants. We have readers who attend almost every month, others who pop in a few times a year, and still others who attend a particular discussion that catches their eyes. All are welcome.

How We Work

Every six months, participants nominate books, and we vote to pick the next six months of discussion topics.

In order to ease access, we prioritize books available in paperback and from the local library. Because we love both books and bookstores, we encourage those who are able to support our generous bookstore host, Books Inc. Opera Plaza, which offers both print and e-books.

Thinking about attending? Do!

We're informal and friendly, and you won't be forced to speak before you're ready, although we love to hear all the unique perspectives our readers bring to the table. You won't be asked to commit to attending monthly.

If you enjoy books, ideas, and conversation with others who are interested in the world, we look forward to meeting you.

A Bit of History

We started as an activity for young professionals associated with the World Affairs Council. The group has been in existence, with a changing cast of participants, since the 1990s. The book history doesn't cover this entire period.
